Is there a way to 'lock' icons on my desktop?

Im sure this question must have been asked but i'll ask anyway- please can someone tell me if there is a way to lock my icons on my Vista desktop? I spent ages earlier organising them where i wanted them only for a restart to completely ruin them and (seemingly deliberately :0) put them all over my desktop. Oh id been so pleased with myself too!

Here is how to do it via a Registry Edit - click here

I am sure you used to be able to do it with either rightclicking the taskbar or right clicking the Desktop and tick lock icons.
I was thinking about XP then so maybe not Vista.

Another, easy, way of doing this is to use the free program Fences. click here (If a link is not formed then highlight this and paste into the address bar of your browser)

Hmmm.. I see that the link did form! Try it - you may like it.

Right click on the desktop and select View,
Uncheck Auto Arrange,
click Align to grid
click Show Desktop Icons.

Why a third party option?
