TFT Monitor

I want to purchase a 17" TFT Monitor, but,my graphics are built in and only support 800 x 600 and 1024 x 768.Screen resolution. and I have noticed that most 17" state more than that.
Does this mean that if I fit a graphic card in the apg slot, that I can then run a 17" tft.[I dont know] I have 900mhz Athlon. with 384 mb sdram.
Thanks in antisipation.

Yes you will have to get graphics card and it should then run ok

You can run a 17" TFT at 1024 x 768 resolution with your on-board graphics. I know a lot of people choose that resolution because they find the native 17" TFT resolution of 1280 x 1024 difficult to read.

Having said that, if you are going to purchase a TFT you should really get a half decent AGP graphics card to compliment it.

Thanks Chaps you have both confirmed what I had half thought but I am not quit up on this resolution thingy yet, but I will get there

You will be dissapointed with the 1280 x 1024. I find it unattractive/difficult to read even with incresed size fonts and icons. The 1024 x 768 is very good - bet you will be dissapointed if you pay for a new graphics card and run at the higher resolution

1280x1024 is the correct resolution for a 17" TFT screen, and though you can run at a lower resolution you will be very disappointed with the display, strongly advise you to view one at a lower resolution before buying.

If you find that 1280x1024 is a little on the small size, then a 15" TFT monitor running at 1024x768 may be better suited for you. This is the size of display you will see on Laptops. Regards. j.

but surely you can change the resolution on TFT's just as with a CRT? I know a TFT only has a set no of pixels.

  Djohn 20:32 05 Sep 03

Yep! I can change mine to 3 different settings, but all look vastly inferior to the correct one of 1280x1024. I think my TFT is the best investment I have made, but also find the display a little on the small side, but razor sharp! If I was to have the choice again, then I would choose the same make but a 15" screen, it's true that your will display slightly less, but the 1024x768 display would be a little better for my eyesight. I have a 17" LG TFT and find it handles 1280*1024 down to 1024*786 fine. I find the font size ok, but it would help to be bigger for internet and desktop, but once you're in a word document or another application, there's no problem.

Yes, I agree with what you say, all applications are fine, just some sites and desktop itself. j.
