Text selection overshoot

If I want to select some of the text in a Word document, if the required text goes below the window, I cannot seem to prevent the selection overrunning to the end of the document. If I try to go back above the top of the window the reverse happens and I end up at the top of the document with the wrong text selected. It did not use to happen with a 75 Mhz processor (I now have an AMD 3.2 Ghz) Can anyone tell me how to slow down the scrolling?

Click at the beginning of the text; release the mouse button. Hold down the Shift key while you scroll to the end of the text that you want to select. Click the end of the text.
