Hi All,
I'm running 98SE how do I test the modem(internal)

  mark500 13:33 08 Oct 03

Go to Start - Settings - Control Panel - System - Device Manager. Look for the modems entry. Right click and choose properties. Click Diagnostics and Query Modem. This does not tell you if you have a dialing tone (I don't think) but it testd the internal Strings/Commands etc.

You can also install utilities, one being MyVitalAgent, that will constantly check your modem speed (or a website such as PCPitStop), but don't read too much into the readings - they can vary from minute to minute depending on the line itself and the amount of traffic.

Hi mark500 and Stuartli, I've looked in device manager and found modem properties but no diagnostics and query modem.I usually keep open the dial up box so I can see the connected and downloading speeds.

The problem I am having is with the connection to the ISP, usually takes 3 or 4 goes and I only get a low speed connection then I get cut off after about a minute, France Telecom have tested the line and It's ok. I was advised by a Gateway technician to test the modem after he un-installed and reinstalled the driver.

Any other help you can offer will be very much appreciated as are your swift replies to my original question.

Regards,

Sapins.

Connection seems OK what are you getting with both downloads I connect nearly always at 48000 and speed on the site varies from about 42000bps to 46000bps although I did get a 52000bps the other day that I tested it. this below the bar graf

woodchip

2nd test reads 710

3rd " " 1360

4th " " 1320

5th " " 1390

I note it says try the test at an off peak time may get a better result then!

Just realised this is the longest connection I have had for 8days!

I think your modem is OK, The line is the big problem if it's not working as it should. to test that roughly pick the phone up and listen for noise. If there is any get on to BT to put it right

PS just ran test on Dial-Up v90 from where I am, and on the top one I got 5180 So if you are trying that one your speed is down. My connection is 48000bps at the moment
