I agree completely - for home users it is far simpler to just turn off the automatic update downloader.

The temporary blocking described in the link provided by Powerless is designed to help corporate customers who have many desktops to administer, and allows a breathing space of around 4 months - after that SP2 will be delivered anyway, provided Automatic update is turned on.
