My neighbor asked for my assistance in setting up a wireless broadband connection through his existing Telewest broadband.

he has a Laptop that has a wireless network buitl in. He has bought a Buffallo Wireless Access Point/ Router.

He also has his existing laptop that connects via USB the Motorolla Telewest Cable Modem. The Cable modem also has a network port.

i connected the Buffallo Access point with a RJ45 cable to the Motorolla Cable MOdem. The two laptops that have wireless cards in them can establish a connection through the Wireless Access Point, but CANNOT surf the net.

i tried various configurations, but to no avail.

hope somebody can help.

i'm not experienced with wireless networks, but I think the problem is setting the internet options up to use a router, im sure someone on here can help with that (come on all you network administrators!). if you dont get help try again during the day when these guys have nowt else to do but surf for porn and read folk's emails (only kidding!).

stuff about subnet masks and separate router IP addresses come to mind but i know little about anything more than a home network (despite doing a year of a cisco networking course).

The MAC address is where your problems may lie.

Telewest only allows access through the cable modem to the network card that has the same MAC address as the one that was registered on setup.

You need to tell the router to use the same MAC address as the computer that was originally connected to the broadband. This way, when any traffic goes through the modem from the router, the MAC address is the same as the one that is registered.

However, as the modem was connected via the USB, this may not be the case. Does the laptop that was originally connected to the cable modem have a network card installed? If so, try and see if that works with the RJ45 plugged into the modem and not the USB. If not then I think you'll have to phone Telewest up and ask them how to switch from USB to RJ45.

If it does work then you need to access the settings for the router and give it the MAC address of original laptop.

I have a desktop connected to a Netgear router and access point and a laptop wirelessly connected. I am also connected to Telewest but with the RJ45 modem (Motorolla Surfboard). The desktop was connected to the modem so I followed the setup instructions of the router, connected the cable modem to the router and the router to the desktop. Ran the router software and selected "Use this computer's MAC address".

Everything worked.

Let me know how you get on.

Phoned Telewest and gave them the MAC number for the Wireless Access Point and presto....working fine.
