System32\Drivers\Ntfs.sys Missing or Corrupt

I am trying to help a friend whose PC running Win XP Home edition will not boot, the above error showing. I have tried to repair with the OS CD, but the PC does not allow me to boot from this either to safe mode or to reinstall windows. Please help.

Thanks for this, I cannot start the recovery console as when asked to press r (no other choice) the system reboots and the problem repeats. further advice would be appreciated. Cheers.

Hi, have you gone into the BIOS and set the CD drive as the first bootable drive, then tried booting from CD.
