system32 file missing?

I have a friend who has a toshiba laptop.

Today when starting it up it gave the following error message:

Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

But she has no recovery disc!

Is there any way to get passed this?

is the laptop newish? if so it should be preinstalled and you just need to press an f key to start the process! keep an eye out when the boot screen comes up

Monsta - Its about three years old. I will have her try hitting the F key when she starts it up.

VoG - I read this thread but she doesnt have the recovery CD roms for XP.

If it doesnt have the recovery stuff preinstalled as monsta suggests, is there any ohter way?

Thanks for your help.
