system32 file missing

I am running xp home on my laptop. I recently loaded avast antivirus and it checked my system and got rid of a few files it said were viruses. However everytime that i restart my laptop the following message comes up

windows cannot find 'C:\WINDOWS\System32\System32.exe'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try agian. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search.

Im not sure what this means, do i have to try and find this file, or is it somehow possible to get it off the internet.
Any help would be great

Try looking in msconfig ,and untick the line that calls system32.exe at startup, it seems the virus has gone but not the start up line for it.
