SYSTEM RESTORE NOT WORKING

System Restore when used to try and recover previous restore points comes up with 'Unable to restore to previous setting - no changes have been made' Why is this? Help please.

Verify that you have enough free space on all your drives as required by System Restore. If the free space on any partition system restore is monitoring falls below 50 MB, System Restore will suspend and purge out all restore points to free up disk space. It will automatically reactivate when 200 MB+ free space is available.

If using Norton switch it off.

It's because nothing significant has changed, therefore the restore would achieve nothing.
Restore points can be set:
By you, manually.
By the system when a configuration has changed.
By the system when an auto-update has changed something.
By installing software which automatically creates a restore point BEFORE installation in case something goes wrong.

It's not a failsafe operation, in fact it's a bit hit and miss.

You'll have more chance of success doing it from safemode.

I have found 'system restore' thoroughly unreliable. Whenever I have badly needed it I always get the same message. If I switch it off and then restart it then it will work perfectly. Then something goes wrong and you try a restore and - nothing!

I have switched it off permaneantly now and run Acronis True Image, which always works (maybe that was tempting fate?)

Disable AV and firewall before running system restore. do not forget to enable afterwards.

Disabled AV and Firewall still not working

I can try the following, but which one;-
1. sfc/scannow ?
2. Evesham Product Recovery CD-Rom (pre service pack 2)?
3. Evesham Consumer Systems XP Support CD (pre service pack 2)?

  Stuartli 15:35 19 Dec 07

Try sfc /scannow first.

System Restore, as already mentioned, only creates restore points if anything has been changed, such as new installations or uninstallations.
