System restore has gone back to year 1

One of my flock was given an old 'Time' machine with Win2000 about a year ago.
As he is a total newbie I cleared all reference to its past life[his sons] even down to removing it's 'Time' I/D and its tie up to a now defunct ISP
So that short of a reformat this was a 'bare' machine.

And he has been having fun getting to grips with the Internet and so forth.

Then he hit a snag.
I tried several fixes that did not seem to do much
So I thought- OK system restore.

Well now here is the rub the system restored OK
back 3 years with all his sons programs and Internet settings and so forth.
So I have now set it to 'unrestore' and will work out his problems another way.

It will not now undo this restore or move forward to yesterdays or the day before's point.
So what is the next move please.

Can you go into safe mode and try and restore it back from there.

What I don't understand is that in click here you said it was W2K. W2K definitely does not have System Restore. Furthermore, SR does not behave as you described - it only restores Windows files.

So it seems to me that you have used some third party restore program like a manufacturer's 'restore to factory settings' utility.

How low do you want to go

DO you have the serial number for the machine?
and the programs to reinstall if required?

  jack 17:46 09 May 08

Thank you Buteman- will give it a bash when he brings the machine to me tomorrow and anything else you chaps can think of

  jack 20:22 09 May 08

That is an interesting point.
System Restore is definitely there in System Tools
not a third party add on such as 'Go Back' with which I am familiar from 98 days
When I get the machine to-morrow I'll take a screen shot of the page for your own puzzlement.

I wonder, this is/was a 'Time' machine- can the 'big' brands have their own variations of Windows?

and just where are you looking at "System Tools" in Win2K ?

  jack 08:33 10 May 08

daba
It looks exactly like the XP version.
So system tools all the usual then last line is
'System Restore'

As I said earlier when I get the machine and set up on the KVA rig I'll take a screen shot

Fired it up

Lo - it is not Win 2k at all
Its Win ME

Oh dear even worse
