System restore came back with empty files?

A friend using ME carried out a system restore which took quite sometime to finish. Once the system had eventually restarted it came back with empty files. All the program files are in place but they are all empty. Tried a search for various files but none found. Is this a case for re-installation? Or is there a way of restoring the files. It's a relatively new system using a 2.4 P4. This system is located in the room of a loft conversion which can get quite warm, could this be the effect of the heat? Thanks in advance

Sorted. Norton Anti-Virus was the problem. It was the only icon missing on the system, once re-installed all returned to normal.
