system idle process?

my sisters pc which is an xp,is showing 97 cpu useage in the task manager "system idle process"
her tower light is always amber instead of green ,all advice welcome.

This is about normal, for XP it its exactly what it says the system is idling.

The idle process is a "Do nothing" loop that keeps the CPU occupied when there is no work for it to do.

The task manager shows 2 figures. One is CPU usage, which should be 0 - 2% when idle. The other is just CPU for system idle process, which is usually 98.

I've always assumed that the latter figure is the proportion of the usage being used by the idle process, that is, 98% of the 2%.
