System 'hangs' on boot.

It's a MESH PC, 3 years old, 2nd ASUS MoBo with Athlon 1Ghz and 128Mb RAM. Award BIOS at rev 1.011. Win98SE.

After Mem count test, Boot-up process frequently hangs with incomplete option line: "Press DEL to enter SETUP: Press ESC to s ".
After 20 sec or so it may continue but then stays at the PCI search for 2 or 3 mins or even 10!

Sometimes it may pass through boot period but Windows loads in Safemode with no mouse driver.

There have been no hardware or software changes for months.
RegClean found a few probs and couldn't correct them.Unfortunately, all older(good?) Reg auto-backups have been over-written.

I'm suspecting a intermittant mem problem and possibly windows corruption.

Any other ideas?

Is it set up to do a quick Power On Self Test (POST)? If so, go into CMOS BIOS Setup and disable it. On boot up it should report any problem it finds with the memory (but could be intermittent).

Have you tried defragging the drive?....TT
