System freeze problem

Whilst playing Rome Total War 2 weeks ago the system froze. Ctrl+Alt+Del managed to get rid of the game but then the icons on the desktop along with the taskbar flashed on and off the screen continuously whilst the wallpaper remained static in the background. The only way to get out of this situation was to restart the system via the tower button. Believing the game to be the reason I uninstalled it but the problem continues; in that the system freezes more often and results in the above - always after a freeze. Also, occasionally on booting I get the same thing happening just when the icons are about to load. Basically, in one way or another this is now a daily occurance. I'm using XP Pro by the way.
Any ideas its driving me crazy?

Is there any one thing that causes this to happen or is it random?

As there seems to be a problem with your display I'd try reinstalling my graphics driver and direct x as these could have got messed up

Try this first
REpair XP

Type
sfc /scannow
in the run box, press enter and let system file checker find and replace missing / corrupt file in windows and explorer.
This will take awhile to complete and you may be asked for the CD to be in the drive if windows is not preinstalled on the hard drive.
