system file checker

win98se has a SFC and as my main puter is running XP Pro I looked for a similar Prog. to check my Daughters PC. I found a file in sys 32 that is called sfc and so I tried to start it but nothing happened other than a black dos box flashing on and off. When the curser was placed on the file it said that it was a prog. used by win 2000. So my question is should it work with XP or not? I seem to remember reading that XP had a system file checker.

Start, run and type in exactly as it appears below:

sfc /scannow

  Skyver 22:58 12 Nov 05

You need to start it from a command prompt - Start Menu/Run, type `cmd`, type `sfc /?` at the DOS prompt for options.

No, it should run from the Run box, you don't need to be at a command prompt.

Yes, granted

At Run You type SFC /SCANNOW with XP CD in Computer, or the XP setup may be preinstalled and XP setup files may be on Computer so that you can run without CD

What a fast and on the nail response. Thank you VoG™, Skyver, and woodchip. I could have looked it up in my various how to books but have got flu and my head is coming off. The siblings still look for help even if I was breathing my last. Regards.
