System date

I had a problem today my system would not start.
It would only boot to a black screen.
I check my BIOS setting and found my system date had changed to:12 JANUARY 1980
After changing back all seems fine.
I am just a little confused as to what would cause this.

CMOS battery on its way out would cause it, or a hard reset of the BIOS. If it happens again, or if your system is slowly losing time then change the CMOS battery.

I agree with OTT_Buzzard that the most likely cause is CMOS battery. Cost of around £2 to replace and about 5 minutes work if it is a desktop computer.

thanks for answers
It's not a desktop though its a netbook about 2 months old

If it happens again, return it to the shop where you got it for a warranty claim.

Yep agree it's prob CMOS battery.
(am posting this at 16:35 to see if it jumps above Technotiger's post - just for fun)

Could still be, and probably is, the CMOS Battery needing replacing.

canarieslover - just as a matter of interest a pack of 5 CMOS batteries, is just £1 in a Pound Shop!

Yep it jumped above :)

Oi, get in the queue ... LoL

Thank you all
But still puzzled!
I leave my system runing 24/7 only restarted because of system errors.
I thought the CMOS BAT was only used when no other power was available.

Try another restart and see if it happens again. If it does then you may well have a motherboard fault that is resetting the BIOS in the same way as a dead battery would. Certainly would take it back under warranty if that was the case.
