Windows XP has a built in system restore feature which allows you to go back in time if your software configuration becomes unstable after installing updates/patches etc. Click: start, programs, accessories, system tools, system restore, create a restore point. Follow the prompts and after the restore point has been created you can install your updates. If your system becomes unstable you can go back to the system restore screen and ask it to restore your hdd to its previous state by using the calendar.
