Could anyone advise please if,after use, a pc should be turned off by the switch on the case AND
at the mains, or should it only be switched off at the mains if it is not intended to use the pc for several days?

I don't think it's the end of the world if switch only. However, if you don't have a surge protected power supply I would recommend switching it off at the mains. Having had a tremendous house fire because of an electrical surge I wouldn't want it to happen to anyone else.
