Is it really necesssary to have a swop file now that I have 512 Mb of ram, If i do need to have a swop file should I let windows manage it or should I set the six=ze myself, and how big should it be.

Yes, a swapfile is essential even with 512 Mb RAM. My own preference is to set the Minimum to double the RAM amount and let Windows manage it, but you could set it to a minimum size of 1024 Mb with and set maximum the same, on a freshly defragged drive. This will minimise fragmentation.

Which OS are you using ?

Yes it is still necessary to have the swap file.

The size of the file depends on what available amount of hard drive space you have. Ideally it would be better put on a partition or slave drive. If you can afford the hard drive space then set it at 1000Mb min and 1000Mb max. This setting will also help with the fragmentation of files on the hard disk.
