Svchost1at problem

My friend is running ME on his computer but has a big problem with his internet connection. He was using Freeserve but it would not connect. I came round and put 0844access.net on and we managed to get on. After a few minutes we got an error message "Svchost1at has caused an error in kernel32.dll. Svchos1 will now close." The connection has gone and so has the dial up icon we just created. Does any one know how to shift this?
He did have a problem with some autodialling to a premium number in Ohio. I am sure that it is connected to this in some way.

Thanks in advance

It's a virus. Run your AV, MS antispyware, adaware, A2 and spybot s and d.
