I have just come accross a rather unusual file in the System directory of a desktop PC running Windows ME. The file is labelled as "RemoveCpl.exe" under the start-up tab in MSCONFIG also, and point to no known directory.

I have searched the net i.e. google with no luck

any ideas?

I currently have no AV software installed, as most are not compatible (Pentium 166 :-S )

cpl is the file extension of the Control Panel Icons/applet. looks like this is a programme to remove one. Have you tried right clicking it to choose properties, this sometimes gives information as to who created the file, and from this you can see what programme it is likely to belong

Regarding the AV Software, have a look at click here.
It's good, self-updating and FREE.
