Suggestions for suitable base unit

If my Dell dimension 5150 looks like being too expensive to repair, I am looking at possibly buying a new base unit.
I have looked at a Dell Inspiron 545 (without monitor) - the one with the largest video card - as my daughter loves playing Sims 3.
Can someone please tell me if this can handle this?

Your 5150 should easily be repairable as it sounds like a software fault with windows rather than a hardware fault.

I would suggest getting one with integrated graphics click here, & install your own dedicated graphics card - a £50 HD 4670 for example click here. This is the best graphics card you could go for without having to upgrade the PSU or anything else.

The HD 4350 / GT220 graphics cards upgrades they offer are much too expensive at £60 & £110 respectively. The former will be particularly poor for games & is really worth only £20-25. G

Sorry, the first 'click here' should have been click here.

As Fruit Bat says though, it will be worth trying to repair your present PC. Will likely save you a bundle. G

The model I was looking at comes with a nVidia GeForce GT220 1024mb graphics card - is this good?

Yes, so does mine, but it's offered at a £110 premium, which is not good. The HD 4670 is better at less than half the price. Dell really do need to stop over-pricing their upgrades!

Do you have a direct link to yours please? G
