sudden drop in earphone volume

I work with a 2 yr. old budget pc from PC World. I spend most of my time in Rural Spain and rely on the Internet phone services of Skype and other VOIP suppliers as Betamax Freecall, they my life line.
Suddenly I have experience a severe drop in volume in our head sets' ear phones and having tried 3 different headsets , I believe the fault not to be with the earphones.
Playing a music CD is fine the sound through my loud speakers seems as good as ever, it just when I am trying to use the phone set up.
I have been into the control panel and cant see any more options where I can slide the volume up having explored the advanced settings. The audio device ( sound card) appears to be a Realtek AC90.
I would be grateful of help / input. Maybe its time for a new sound card?

Could be a dirty or loose fitting jack plug connection.

It would appear you have Realtek AC97 onboard sound - latest drivers for most models is A3.99. See:
