Stroppy Floppy

  jack 21:17 18 May 05

A friend has a floppy disk on which are many treasured items - 951 Kb worth.
When he put it into his machine (Win2000)to retrieve an item. he was informed that disk needed formattig - whould he like now!
As the disk cantained his data he ejected it and passed it to me to have a look at.

I put it into my machine(XP Pro) an it opened with all his stuff.
This I saved- E-mailed it to him and burned a disk as well.
Why would the disk appear to need formatting on hs machine when it had opened previously?

Windows is a queer Operating System, We all get um

Win2000 is based on the NTFS system, the disk may have been formatted in fat32. XP can be either. For some reason NTFS will sometimes read fat32 based disks and sometimes not, I have heard of this happening more than a few times.

And me as I have both

The FAT32/NTFS conclusion is a reasonable assumption will pass it on to my 2000 chums.

Thank you all
