strange shut-down problem

Everytime i end a session on the internet,or a general session on my pc,i have problems when trying to shut down. When i go to turn off computer, and click on that, instead of the pc running through the normal method of shutting down,i.e. saving your settings, windows is shutting down,i have two of three messages that appear, each with it's own progress bar saying ending program.Sometimes these refer to internet explorer, and also msn.As soon as i click on the end now button the pc then freezes on the saving your settings screen.I'm using windows xp.The length of time i spend on the computer also seems to have an effect on this,as only short sessions create no problems. Please help.
