Strange 'icon' appeared on the desktop...

I have noticed that a small white rectangle with a red cross in the middle, about the size of the screen of the "my computer" icon computer screen (roughly a quarter the size of a normal icon)
- has appeared on the desktop. All other desktop icons are normal. This rectangle with red cross has not gone away since rebooting the PC.

Any ideas what it is? Could it be 'malicious' in any way?

Have you tried to open it!.

It could be, rather than open it right click on it and look at the properties of it and see if that gives you a clue. I presume you haven't added anything new in the way of software?

Right click it and scan it first

007al is of course correct scan it with your anti virus first but remember this is probably just a shortcut to something else so the scan will not scan the entire program just the shortcut.

Thanks for the replies. I right clicked on it...and it turned out to be indicating a defunct jpg which hadn't opened when I tried to set it as desktop wallpaper.
When I set the desktop to "none" again...it disappeared.
