Strange Asus A7N8X motherboard problem

Until last night my PC (OS-XP Home SP3) appeared to behave normally. However, when I switched on today I saw a picture of inside a PC entitled A7N8X deluxe (my M/board is an Asus A7N8X2.0 - confirmed by Belarc Advisor). After a minute or 2, it defaulted to a POST test and then a female voice said "test successful; OS loading". The machine then appeared to behave normally after this but my system clock and Outlook calendar said 11.00pm on 31-12-01.
I reset the clock and proceeded normally.
On switching off then on later, the whole process repeated itself.
Does anyone have any ideas about what is happening and how to resolve the problem?

Your CMOS battery needs replacing, the BIOS defaults have come into effect.

Have to agree with brundle's diagnosis.

Thanks for replies.
The diagnosis makes a lot of sense. My CMOS battery has been losing time for a couple of weeks (a few minutes not a few years) and now, presumably, it has gone completely.
Once again, thanks for replies.
