Storing frequently used CDs to hard drive

Good afternoon.

Do I need to use a separate programme in order to use a CD copied to the hard disk or can I simply copy a CD to a folder?

A colleague uses a dictionary all the time which he runs from CD & would like to dispense with the CD and run straight from the HD of his laptop.

You probably only have to install a "Virtual CD Drive", there are lots, if you search Google.

Is your colleague sure that the facility to copy to hard drive isn't already part of the dictionary program?

Most dictionaries that I've seen do allow you to install it on your computer.

I am having a look at it this afternoon, I'll see if it can be installed from the CD. Failing that I'll see what other software is available.

Thanks.

Chambers Dictionary is definitely installable (is that a word?)* as I have it on a machine here together with Harrap- Liris multilanguage dictionary.

If you're on broadband and "always on" there are a number of online dictionaries.

* I'll check in the dictionary!;-))

The OED doesn't seem to be "installable" & either is protected or is a faulty disk as it won't copy in Virtual CD either.

Looking further into it.
