Stopping Microsoft Outlook

I configured Outlook as it seems to be the default e-mail client for a few programs but now I have to check bt yahoo and outlook to pick up all my mail and not all seems to be going to btyahoo. How do I close Outlook without deleting it but have it available if i need it. In Vista the choice is 'use current e-mail client' but it still leaves outlook receiving mail?

Why not set Bt Yahoo to POP and then check all your mail with outlook.
