stop /start printer

I have problem from nowhere with my printer (HP dj9595c). It now 'stutters' on every print, particularly in Word and when it is printing it seems to hog the system almost locking it up. Suspect a memory problem but I have 1gb of DDR RAM! (Got Athlon XP 2000 with 100Gb HD).
Only thing that I can think of is that I recently installed a Canon 8000F scanner and deleted old Caere Omnipage OCR before replacing it with supplied Scansoft Omnipage SE but pretty sure printing was OK afterwards.
No conflicts mentioned on either Canon or HP websites.
Running XP Home so used System Restore to go back before this but still have problem.
2 things - first of all anyone got any ideas and second is there a way of monitoring memory usage?
