how do i stop messenger ads popping up in xp and other windows os pc's? i don't use messenger (although i would like to and therefore do not wish to remove or disable it) yet i still get these ads popping up telling me i have a security flaw, and 'click here' buttons which promise to take me to a site to stop these pop ups!

thanks for any help

install a firewall

and stop the messenger service its not windows messenger but a service that can be safely stopped and will not interfere with messenger itself

start/contol panel/admin tools/services

scroll down to messenger and stop the service and set the startup to disable

I would have posted Powerless's tip - it worked for me...:-)

Steve Gibson's site is well worth a visit in any case.
