I have read that a external dvd burner requires 2.5ghz buti only have a 2ghz laptop

It will work fine; I never heard that requirment and have seen external drives work on a l;ower spec.

Where on earth did you read that! There is no reason why a DVD Burner will not work with a 2 ghz chip! Are you sure you didn't missread?

One of my laptops only has a 1.4ghz and it handles an external DVD+/-RRW burner no problems.

It may mean it requires a certain speed system to burn at full speed. However, even if this were so, it would almoost certainly burn quite happily at a lower speed - and much burning software will automatically adapt the burn speed for best results.
