Startup in xp with minimum running in background

In Windows 98 & ME there was a key stroke on startup that only loaded essential drivers etc. It was useful in that with fast moving powerhungry games virtually all resources were available to run the game. Is there such a facility with XP?

You can go to start run type msconfig and that will show all start up progs

Or try Mike Lin's startup control panel:

You may also be able to create a second identity in XP whereby you can run with the minimum of programs loaded and use it for gaming.

You could try safe mode (F8 or the Control key when booting I believe), but this will stop even the CD/DVD driver loading.

Try pressing, and holding down, the Shift key once Windows starts to load. Keep it held until all hard disk activity stops and this should stop all the Start-Up items loading without any permanant changes to your files.

PS Ken m-f do I know you? Are you from Carshalton?
