Startup Problems

  mcds01 16:47 31 Jan 07

Starting up my Pc (XP Home) takes forever.

It gets past the splash screen and then just shows an empty desktop for ages.

It can take up to 5 minutes.

However if I bring up task manager and kill explorer it starts up no problem.

any ideas?

Try Firefox,See if that helps. It may be your firewall is blocking it,Or maybe if you have just up-graded from IE6 to IE7 and your Anti-Virus is blocking it,What Anti-Virus do you use,

See this previous thread

all the programs I recommend will improve startup performance.

With Startup Inspector, the only programs I load on startup are related to my AV/firewall.

It saves messing about in windows if you are not confident.

none of those suggestions helped.....

The machine stops just after the blue "Windows is logging in" screen and my desktop background has appeared.

Nothing loads until i kill explorer and restart it.

Try a repair

Repair XP by replacing corrupt files

sfc /scannow

in the run box, press enter and let system file checker find and replace missing / corrupt file in windows and explorer. This will take awhile to complete and you may be asked for the CD to be in the drive if windows is not preinstalled on the hard drive.

sfc /scannow problems
