Startup failure

I'm getting the startup error "windows xp professional could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt : \windows\system32\config\system"

Safe mode fails to load, reporting unrepairable errors. I can get to the repair console booting from setup CD but chkdsk /r fails after 36% reporting unrepairable errors again. Fixboot & fixmbr also fail.

I am prepared to reinstall from scratch but thought I'd ask if anyone knows any other ways around this first? I wont be able to view any replies until Monday so thanks in anticipation for any help.

"but chkdsk /r fails after 36% reporting unrepairable errors"

This would normally indicate a hard drive problem.

If you have important data on the drive, before using the recovery instructions on VoG™s link, you might want to try the drive in another working system, as a slave, and see if you can copy off your data.

I have a Flatron L1710B monitor which has work flawlessly for over 2 years. About 6 weeks ago it failed, Lg Flatron sent me another by return.
This failed after a few days, which was replaced and since then I have had two more replaced.

The replacement service is very good, next day delivery etc but I cannot believe all these monitors fail after such a short time. Could there be something on my computer that makes them fail after a short time?

You need to start your own thread.

Thanks very much for the information. I'll try this before going for the full rebuild!
