Just treid re-installing windows xp, but when I start up the pc it comes up with a warning (something about low memory, couldn't read all of it, dissapeared to quick) and automatically restarts the computer.

I would still take the side of the computer and use a desktop fan or Hair Dryer on cool pointing at the CPU, while you try to load XP. If it goes you will know the fan is not good enough. I have had these problems for years on computers and nearly all cases as been cooling problem
.

PS there is also a PSU fan that should be blowing air out of the top back of computer tower
