Start-up Problem

After initial start up I get this error message
"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt
\WINDOWS\System32\Config\system. You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Set up using the original CD-ROM. Select r at the first screen to start repair."
If I do this will I lose any files? Does original CD-ROM mean the operating system disc?
All of this happened after problem with video card when the display broke up

Many thanks. Will I lose any of my files/folders when going through this procedure?

No reason why you should.

I've worked through everything on the link you gave me. Had to cross reference to lots of files and going in and out of the BIOS to change boot device priority. At the moment all is now working ok and I do not appear to have lost any files. So, many thanks for your help and I think I can say "panic over."
