start up problem

  rien 10:47 09 Nov 07

On start up the green lights on the cd/dvd drives come on and stay on. The computer starts OK but the lights remain on and the drives are not recognised in "My Computer." If I shut down again wait a few seconds then restart everything is normal. The lights go out the drives are recognised and the computer runs normally. It has been suggested I flash the bios but I have my doubts about this.
Any ides what could cause this problem

Are the drives working ok. Lights staying on usually means damaged ide cable to drive or ide cables on wrong way round.

Did it do this before or is it a new PC we are talking about. I have seen this sort of thing as Technotiger says when the IDE cable is the wrong way round but you say it then works ok which it wouldn't if it was the cable. Rather weird.
