I want to stop certain items from starting on 'start-up'
How do I do it on XP please?

Start Menu, run..., type MSCONFIG and hit enter, goto the Startup tab and uncheck anything you don't want to run.

in "run" type:
then select the startup tab and deselect any items you do not want to run on startup. Beware, do not deselect items unless you are absolutely sure of what they are. There are several web sites that will help you identify them.
Good luck

Untick items from the "Startup" tab in MSCONFIG ("Start > Run", type MSCONFIG and click OK)

Delete shortcuts from the Startup folders:

C:\Documents and Settings\{username}\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
