Here is a good one.
Friends PC Pentium 3 800Mhz 384Mb RAM,20Gb Hdd, XP SP2. Yes I know its gonna be slow.

It has literally several hundred items on MSCONFIG relating to windows help files. if you untick them they come back on next startup.as a result, it takes 20 minutes to boot up properly, Task manager is full up with these things each pulling resourses.

AVG is clean, so is spybot and adaware, hijack this looks ok

Have disabled system restore, got rid of temp files and temp internet files

Am I going to have to play with the registry? if so where

Cheers
Fragger

Thanks Rawprawn

Shall give it a try, but there must be something causing this.

The main issue is that I cannot disable these items in the first place.

shall post back

Any other ideas out there

Try a system file scan, go to Start/Run/type sfc /scannow (Watch the space between sfc and /) hit enter. You will need your XP CD

Try starting in 'safe mode', then untick the items, restart.

If that dosn't work, try unticking just 1 and reboot, if this works, try uniticking, say, 5 at a time. If one block of five is re-enabled after reboot, go back to unticking those 5 1 at a time, this way you may find the one/s that is/are causing the problem.

I realise that this will take a while, but it's your fault for offering to help:-)

Hope this helps.
