Start menu advice, please

I have tried to follow the advice in this month's magazine about speeding up Windows.

My start-up folder has a lot of programmes, many I don't recognise!

Is it really ok to delete these from the folder?

Does anyone know the bare minimum that I absolutely must have in that folder?

It is all very confusing!

I am running Windows XP with SP2.

Thanks in advance.
