Start up list

My computer runs on Windows XP SP3 and for the past two days whenever I use a program it's then pinned automatically to my start up list, and then I receive a message to say it's full up. I've been deleting these from the list, but they keep returning. Is there something I've inadvertently instructed my computer to do? It's not really threatening anything at present but it could be more significant than I think ?

You can limit the amount of items. Right-click start, then go to properties, Start menu/properties/customise.
