start button and task bar missing

my laptop after my son used it is missing the start button and task bar i dont know how to get it back i used these buttons to gain access to programs and e mails control etc now i cant gain access to some things that are not on the desktop.
i use windows xp anyone please help.

forgot to add when you minimise or change programs they disappear probably to the unseen taskbar

Are you sure it isn't set to AutoHide? Hover the cursor over where it should be and it may appear.

The taskbar might be set to auto-hide.

Try moving the mouse pointer to the bottom of your screen and see if the Taskbar appears.

If it does right click on Start and select properties.Select the Taskbar tab and make sure that "Auto hide the taskbar" is unticked and "Keep the taskbar on top of other windows" is ticked (for XP).
