Standby works once, but not second time

During the day to save time booting up I put my Dell Inspiron 8600 laptop into "Suspend" mode (FN+ESC). The first time I do this it works fine so that when I restart it begins where I left off in short time. Later in the day if I attempt to do this again the screen eventually goes blank (light blue - not the BSofD) and hangs. I eventually have to press and hold the power button for several seconds or even unclick the battery.
I have Windows XP SP2 and everything else works perfectly fine. I have no screensaver running and the power management seems OK.
Any thoughts?
Thank you

I had been experiencing similar problems on my XP PC. I might just have been lucky, butit was resolved by defragging the hard drive.

Thanks for the tip, I use Diskkeeper which defrags on the fly as it were so don't think it is that.
I'm grateful for your interest.
