Stand by or Turn off

Because of sluggish start-up, I've taken to closing down via "Stand by" rather than "Turn off". Am I doing any damage by doing this - and what are the consequences of leaving my system on long term Stand by?

Hibernate might be a better option - it saves a snapshot of what your computer is doing and powers off. When it starts back up, instead of loading Windows it just loads this snapshot and you carry on where you left off. Standby uses more power and will end up costing more on the electric bill and the components can wear out quicker.
