When I try to use either hibernate or standby the computer just does a normal restart.
Iam running Xp with sp2 and all updates installed,I have not installed any programmes since it started and a system restore did not help.I tried to do a rpair with the XP disc but despite my not using one it wanted a password to continue.
Has anyone got any suggestions?

This can happen for a number of reasons. Power settings should be your first port of call, and post back with details of your system and motherboard specs.

you may need to adjust a setting in the bios if you have the manual it may help its normally in power management
