spyware/virus problem

can anyone help with this problem

an icon appeared on the taskbar stating that my computer is infected
the icon on the taskbar is a yellow triangle with and exclamation mark inside

it states in the dialogue box which wont go away "windows has detected spyware infection. it is recommended to use special antispyware tools to prevent data loss
windows will now download and install the most up to date antispyware for you
click here to protect your computer from spyware"

I ran A2 in deep scan mode and nothing was found - avg had detected a virus (or something) and deleted it but this icon and big dialogue box persists and I can't get rid of it. when I tried to get rid of it iwola or awola anti spyware came up and a light green icon briefly appeared in the task bar

help greatly appreciated

I've always found it excellent. As with all spyware/virus programmes its best if you run it in safe mode
