Nintendo Switch (Nintendo NX) release date, price, specs and preview trailer: Switch price…
After a visit from my student son, over Christmas, my computer seems to have some very dubious content, which I cannot eradicate. I am running Win 98SE with a dial up connection and have Norton Antivirus 2004 and Ad-Aware SE Personal running to take care of unwanted visitations. I do not have a firewall installed.
The intruders are :
An alert purporting to be from Windows Security Centre, stating “ Warning, Windows Firewall detected suspicious network activity on your computer. Malicious software codes try to steal your privacy information such as credit card numbers, electronic mail accounts, financial data or passwords. Do you want to download certificated software and protect your computer” “YES/NO”
Several popups which arrive even when my browser is not in use, namely
An invitation to carry out an online Windows Spy Test
An invitation to download software to replace my supposedly missing Antivirus, Antispy and firewall software.
An advert for an online strip poker site
What looks like a EULA for a premium rate porn dialler, which disappears when the “Exit and uninstall” button is clicked, then reappears at a later date.
Also I have an extra toolbar on Internet Explorer with direct links to sites under the headings of Gambling, Internet, Pharmacy, Finance, Insurance and Adult. When I click on remove toolbar, my computer wants to connect to the net.
I have had virus activity detected and 4 files deleted when I ran a virus scan. Ad-Aware found 80 dubious files including malware with a risk rating of 10. These problems persist even after updating AV and Spy definitions. Any suggestions about shifting this crap from my system would be gratefully received.
I think many will be lost for words! No firewall? Pop-ups are the least of your worries.
I would check your calls with BT billing without delay.
Protect yourself properly, I hope you don't do internet banking without a firewall!
You need a Firewall, Antivirus software, Antispyware minimum. A popup stopper and a spam filter would also help. Many have been recommended already the choice is yours.
A good combination from the free ones listed is Firewall -Zonealarm Antivirus -Avast Antispyware-Spyware blaster + Adaware + Spybot

Thanks for the responses everybody. The reason that I have no firewall is that I followed advice on this forum that good AV and Antispy software were adequate. The concensus now seems to be firewall, so I will go with the flow.
Could also be messenger popups if you have messenger installed click here may help with that.
'I think many will be lost for words! No firewall?'...I've not used one for over 2 years. :-))
A decent AV (AVG) and Adaware will get rid of most problems. Spybot may be needed. You do not need to load up on huge amounts of anti-spy' progs though...an AV and 2 others will be enough.
I now have Zonealarm, AdAware and Spybot running as well as Norton AV. Loads of stuff has apparently been detected and cleared, but I still have all of the above mentioned popups and the toolbar displaying themselves within 30 minutes of booting up. Can I do more?
Did you run CWShredder? Link from Fruit Bat /\0/\ above.
