spyware

My computer appears to have have been infected with something which has placed a triangular yellow icon in the sysyem tray. When I hover the cursor over it it tells me that the computer is infected with something that can take information from it. Clicking on the icon opens am Internet Expolrer window which contains adverts for the removal of this intrusion. There is a different ad every time. So far UI've seen three; one for something called Pest Control, another for Malwarewipe and the third, a page called "click here," produced a page telling me about all kinds of things I can get to remove this threat. This page also includes a popup box giving details of a virus called [email protected] and a button to click to download "officially approved security software"

I have scanned the computer with the freeware versions of AVG, AdAware, A squared, Ewido, Microsoft AntiSpyware and Spybot but this has not removed it. I get a different page every time I open IE - all advertising the same things, however.

I am a bit stuck now, I don't know what to do next. Can anyone offer any advice?

Thanks
Alan

I've tried the solutions you guys have provided. Unfortunately, my computer won't open in safe mode. I just get a list of drivers and it sticks at that point. I also tried housecall. It wouldn't work either. It says it has to download somefiles to my computer and thats as far as it gets.

Can anyone tell me what to do now?

Thanks again for the assistance
Alan

You could try Counterspy free for 15 days click here if that fails then I think it might be time for a specialist forum that deals with hijackthis logs. Somewhere like here click here
